Animal Welfare Inconsistencies?

1/4/2011

Animal welfare activists seem prone to certain inconsistencies. Then again, my perception of inconsistency may merely be a reflection of a lack of understanding of the subject.

Some of the more extreme elements of the movement decry the harm done to animals by humans – even to the point of being against hunting, yet they say nothing of how some of those same animals that they protect hunt and harm other animals.

Male dolphins practice killing porpoises before they kill the young of rival males. Cats toy with rodents before finally killing them. Squid are sloppy and wasteful; they take bites out of several fish, never finishing any of them, and leaving them all to die. Wasps paralyze spiders with a sting before laying their eggs in the still-living body of the spider. Certain parasitic worms screw with the development of tadpoles, giving the resulting frogs extra legs, making them slow and vulnerable to birds – just so the parasite can enter the next phase of its life cycle in the gut of the bird! Despite all our flaws, humans are among the most humane and efficient of killers.

To me, this seems like unfair discrimination based solely on the race of the hunter. Am I wrong?

"humans are among the most humane and efficient of killers"

humans - humane ?

How can hooking a fish on a line and tearing a hole in the side of it's mouth be humane? Isn't there a better way?

I like to get my fish from the market. They are already dead and they don't suffer when I buy them.

Heh! IMHO it should be "animal rights", not "animal welfare".
DH used to tour Europe with his bands. His first tour was poorly planned, most of the shows were in squats. It was... quite an experience... on many levels. Inhabitants of one of the squats owned huge dogs, and the dogs were fighting. Their fur was flying, and blood was everywhere. DH and his band asked the anarchists to keep their dogs away from each other. The anarchists said, that they won't, and that the dogs need to work it out among themselves. Disgusting.
Wild animals do what wild animals do. We are not going to station peacekeepers in the jungle -- or anywhere else. (Although, I understand, we do control the numbers of certain predators, like wolves, and kill them off if they get too numerous.) Domesticated animals are different, especially dogs. Dogs like human company and obey us. We humans need order in our vicinity.

What I'm gathering from the combination of your comments (fish eater & eots) is that you mind if hunting is done near you in your presence, but not so much if done in the jungle (or oceans). Is this right?
If so, I think that you are just normal people and this post wasn't meant to apply to you necessarily.

Not at all. Violence is a part of nature. However, domesticated animals are different. Cats hunt birds, and that's fine. But dogs are expected to (and want to) obey us humans and behave as civilized beasts.

Oh, okay. So this is a totally separate issue, then? Domesticated dogs must be civilized, but is it fair to restrict both dogs and humans from hunting when other animals are worse?

I totally agree, but the points could easily be stated in a clearer fashion, thats all I was saying. No prob here bro, I m not that uptight about it.
