A few weeks ago I heard yet another way to classify people as either liberal or conservative. The person I was listening to said that liberals are those who worry too much what others think about their actions, whereas conservatives are those that do what needs to be done no matter how upset people get.
Most people are moderates and don’t feel we live in a particularly divided country. The media, of course, frames everything in terms of left and right and has to find ways to classify people as one or the other. Whether someone is a conservative or liberal then, depends on how the issues are framed.
It has been asked why liberals are angrier than conservatives. I’m not sure if the premise of the question is completely true, but conservatives have been quick to offer up theories.
Liberals present themselves as tolerant, and in fact consider liberalism to be the literal definition of tolerance. However, many liberals call themselves conservatives because of stories like these:
Sharia law in America Anti-American American schools At the end of my previous post, I asked why someone who hates a country or is somehow ashamed of the flag of that country would want to run for office to become a leader that same country. It seems like either an inexplicable contradiction or some sort of treason. This is the question asked by conservatives of certain liberals. A similar question has been asked about conservatives who, after railing against government interference and claiming that government can do little right, end up serving over the same departments they openly detest. Anticipating that some of my readers may conflate these two issues, I thought I would address the latter in more detail.
Liberals claim Conservatives want to regulate sexuality. Conservatives claim liberals promote promiscuity. Both claim the other side is simply obsessed with sex.
I recently read this article about why simply properly informing the misinformed often backfires, leaving things in a worse state than before.
Recently, while patrolling the blogosphere, I came across an interesting theory about what makes one either pro-choice or pro-life. It seems that for many, it's all about sex...
It's crazy statements like these that get the more excitable and weaker-minded among us whipped into a frenzy of agitation. Is it any wonder that we don't talk to each other? End the partisanship.
