Dear Occupy Wall Street, Tea Parties, and Coffee Parties,

2/25/2012

The following are three open letters that I think are very important to get out. One is to Occupy Wall Street, one is to the Tea Parties, and the last is to the Coffee Parties. Please repost until it spreads through the internet. Repost individually, or with all three together, with or without commentary, with or without your website added at the end, or however you see fit. We are more alike than you think. Together we stand, divided we fall.
Dear Occupy Wall Street,

We are frustrated. We are frustrated over stagnant wages and higher gas prices. We are frustrated by high unemployment and high foreclosure rates. We are frustrated by a government that spends more and more, but little of it on those who need it most.

We know the cause of this. Large corporations and those who profit from them dominate the markets. They lock out competitors and hide their identities through multiple levels of ownership. They overstate their assets and engage in insider trading. They use their disproportionate power to influence elections through ads and influence representatives with lobbyists. The problem is the extremely unequal distribution of money and power.

Those in the Tea Parties are frustrated as well – and they are frustrated for many of the same reasons. They blame an intrusive, meddlesome government and high spending. They are not necessarily wrong, but we know this is only part of the problem. The meddling continues because the corporate lobbyists and corporate media have hijacked the democratic process and that even in a world devoid of government subsidies and other aid to the rich, the concentration of power that the top corporations wield is itself a threat to liberty. We need to reach out to the Tea Partiers with kindness and guidance – not to convince them to join Occupy Wall Street – but to show them that they are already members and don’t know it yet.

Those in The Coffee Parties are frustrated as well – and they are frustrated for many of the same reasons. They blame the lack of unity and civility of the American people. They are not necessarily wrong, but we know this is only part of the problem. The corporate media keeps us divided, raising minor issues as distractions to keep us at each other’s throats. We need to reach out to the Coffee Partiers with kindness and guidance – not to convince them to join the Occupy Wall Street – but to show them that they are already members and don’t know it yet.

Dear Tea Parties,

We are frustrated. We are frustrated over stagnant wages and higher gas prices. We are frustrated by high unemployment and high foreclosure rates. We are frustrated by a government that spends more and more, but little of it on those who need it most.

We know the cause of this. Government regulation that makes every activity more expensive. Regulation so onerous that it keeps many out of the market, stifling competition. Subsidies and bailouts to corporate cronies, rather than letting the consumer decide which business best deserve their support. The problem is taxing and borrowing to fund spending by a government out of control.

Those in the Coffee Parties are frustrated as well – and they are frustrated for many of the same reasons. They blame the inability of the American people to get along and work together on common goals. They are not necessarily wrong, but we know this is only part of the problem. The Republicans and Democrats distract us with overblown concerns because they need us divided. They need convenient scapegoats to blame to further their chances of election so they can grow the power of government and thus their personal political power. It is because government is such a focus of power that it attracts corruption. We need to reach out to the Coffee Partiers with kindness and guidance – not to convince them to join the Tea Parties – but to show them that they are already members and don’t know it yet.

Those in Occupy Wall Street are frustrated as well – and they are frustrated for many of the same reasons. They blame the disproportionate power of oversized corporations. They are not necessarily wrong, but we know this is only part of the problem. Big government and big business work together and corporations would not have such an advantage if the government did not (and was too weak to be in a position to) aid them. Lobbyists would not bother to try and corrupt our leaders if our leaders had nothing they were able to offer in return. We need to reach out to the Occupiers with kindness and guidance – not to convince them to join the Tea Parties – but to show them that they are already members and don’t know it yet.

Dear Coffee Parties,

We are frustrated. We are frustrated over stagnant wages and higher gas prices. We are frustrated by high unemployment and high foreclosure rates. We are frustrated by a government that spends more and more, but little of it on those who need it most.

We know the cause of this. Gridlock in Washington and politicians more interested in attacking the character of their opponents than doing their jobs to serve the American people. Ideologues more interested in imposing their agenda on us all than in living in a mutually respectful society. It is the inability of the citizenry to put aside their petty disputes and come together to present a unified front. The problem is incivility and partisanship.

Those in Occupy Wall Street are frustrated as well – and they are frustrated for many of the same reasons. They blame the disproportionate power of oversized corporations. They are not necessarily wrong, but we know this is only part of the problem. Big government and big business work together and both parties are involved – even while they raise minor issues as distractions to keep us at each other’s throats. We need to reach out to the Occupiers with kindness and guidance – not to convince them to join the Coffee Parties – but to show them that they are already members and don’t know it yet.

Those in the Tea Parties are frustrated as well – and they are frustrated for many of the same reasons. They blame an intrusive, meddlesome government and high spending. They are not necessarily wrong, but we know this is only part of the problem. The meddling continues because the Republicans and Democrats keep us divided while they collude on bigger things. We need to reach out to the Tea Partiers with kindness and guidance – not to convince them to join the Coffee Parties – but to show them that they are already members and don’t know it yet.

Pretty much all true, very well put. I'll look to giving this to my local Occupy branch.
