I recently came across a website CompassionAndChoices.org that speaks extensively of our "right to die." At first, I began to dismiss it as a suicide and euthanasia site, but then I kept reading...
It turns out, that's only 2% of what the site is about. Mostly, it speaks of terminal patients being kept alive artificially in a torturous state by intrusive means, often against their will. Knowing it to be a losing battle anyways, some people just want to die naturally. I think this story sometimes gets lost in the heated political debates we have over the subject of death. We may not agree on when it becomes ethical to artificially end someone's life, but can we at least agree that we have the right to allow ourselves a natural death? I hope so.
This incident illustrates the reason why we shouldn't simply shut our ears when we hear something we don't like. Keep listening to each other and you will learn.
